Solidarity Rally; West Side Iron Strike

Solidairty Rally In Support of Non-Union Iron Workers on Strike Friday, August 18, 4:00pm-6:00pm Willamalane Park, 1276 G St. Springfield Workers at West Side Iron in Springfield have been on Strike since June 1st. West Side Iron is a structural steel and bridge erector based ni Springfield, Oregon. Workers have reported a long list of abuses that they experienced at West Side Iron. West Side Iron has refused to meet with community member or the Striking Workers. West side Iron is under federal investigation for violating federal labor laws and workers at West Side Iron workers have shared their experiences at the company which include; • Verbal abuse and disrespect by management; • Lack of safety and occupational training • The company does not provide water on all jobsites • Having to supply most of their own personal Protective Equipment; • Workers say they performed welding on projects even though they were not certified to do so; • Workers say they did not receive paid sick days and vacation days. McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center through Layton Construction has subcontracted with West Side Iron to do work on their new $100 million expansion. ESSN and other community members have requested that the President of McKenzie-Willamette meet with a small delegation of workers and concerned community members to discuss the abuses being perpetrated by one of their subcontractors but our requests for a meeting have been ignored.
