United Academics Executive Director Hired

Finally, we are pleased to announce that we have hired Dave Cecil as our Executive Director. Some of you may remember Dave from his years working for the GTFF. He was also the lead organizer for our organizing campaign several years ago and he was a co-lead negotiator during our bargaining. We are very happy that he has come back to work for us and will be there to help us steer our union in the right direction.

We are also in the process of hiring an Administrative Assistant to help us manage our data, keep the books, and to respond to UA members when they call the office.

Nominations open for UA delegates to AAUP and AFT conventions

With the formation of our new union, all United Academics members now have the opportunity to participate as delegates representing our union at meetings of the state and national unions with which we are affiliated: the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the American Association of University Professors (AAUP).

These affiliations and meetings are critical for our union and our members—they give us a voice in extremely important policy and budget decisions concerning higher education at a state and national level.

As specified in our UAUO Constitution, each year we will solicit nominations from members who wish to participate in state or national meetings of these affiliates and represent United Academics. This is a chance for every union member to help represent our union.

This year, we have three opportunities for members to serve as delegates:

  • The annual convention of the American Federation of Teachers-Oregon, April 4-6 in Sunriver, OR
  • The annual convention of the American Federation of Teachers, July 11-14, in Los Angeles, CA
  • The annual conference of the AAUP, June 11-15, in Washington, DC

All union members are eligible to run for delegate positions and to vote. As explained below, United Academics will be able to cover the travel expenses of a limited number of union members who wish to participate. As a union, we have an obligation to facilitate the participation of a sufficient number of our members to represent our union’s interests while responsibly managing our budget.

If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please do not hesitate to contact United Academics at info@uauoregon.org

In order to run for a delegate position, a member must return a nomination form with ten signatures of union members by February 6, 2014, 5pm. A print version of this notice has been sent to your postal address as well.

AFT-Oregon

The AFT-Oregon Convention will be held in Sunriver, Oregon April 4-6, 2014. You will be expected to represent United Academics by serving on a Committee, participating in events, and voting on issues.

We are not permitted to send more than 27 delegates from our union to this convention.

American Federation of Teachers National Convention

The AFT Convention will be held in Los Angeles, July 11-14, 2014. You will be expected to represent United Academics by voting on issues, resolutions and for officers of AFT.

AAUP Annual Conference

The AAUP Annual Conference will be held in Washington, DC, June 11-15, 2014. You will be expected to represent United Academics by voting on AAUP business.

If you choose to run for delegate and are in the top 5 vote-getters, then United Academics will pay for your travel and lodging, supply you with a $30 per diem, and pay for your registration.

Please use the nomination form you received in the mail at your home address, or access the same form below. Be sure to indicate which of the delegate positions you are nominating for.

You may nominate for any one, two, or all three delegate positions. Return the form to the United Academics office (872 E. 13th Ave., Eugene, OR 97401 ) or info@uauoregon.org by February 6, 2014, 5pm.
