Equity and Inclusion for Reviews and Promotion
Our first collective bargaining agreement specified that faculty up for tenure, promotion, or review should be allowed to include a statement about how they have contributed toward the equity and inclusiveness of the university. We bargained this provision as another way for the administration to recognize ALL the work faculty toward making the university a great place to work and learn. Yes, we wanted to provide all faculty with a small incentive to do this work, but mostly we were seeking a way to recognize the work that was already being done by so many.
Unfortunately, the opportunity to include a "discussion of contributions to institutional equity and inclusion" was conflated with the need to provide a 3-5 page personal statement when submitting promotion and review materials. To be clear, there is no requirement in the CBA to submit a 3-5 statement about a faculty member's contribution to equity and inclusion.
Most faculty are already doing work that contributes to institutional equity and inclusion. If you are looking for some guidance about what type of work is being recognized, CoDaC has developed a wonderful document with more information. They also have people who are happy to work with faculty to boost this important work.
