United Academics and the Office of the Provost and Academic Affairs invite all first, second, and third-year faculty to a series of workshops offered through the Faculty Organizing for Success Program. Non-tenure track and tenure track faculty from all UO departments are eligible for this year-long mentorship and professional development program. Monthly Sessions for 2017-18
The program’s monthly sessions (held on Thursdays from noon-2 with lunch provided) will include faculty from across campus addressing topics that include:
- Establishing and implementing your research plan
- Developing a teaching, research, and personal support network on campus
- Navigating departmental and institutional cultures
- External grants and fellowships
- Approaches to undergraduate and graduate student mentoring
- Book proposals and working with presses and journal editors
- Meeting your equity and inclusion obligations
Faculty are invited to participate in monthly meetings and workshops focusing on three central objectives:
- RESEARCH SUPPORT AND PRODUCTIVITY to ensure that new faculty establish their research agenda, trajectory, and strategy early in their careers and in advance of contract review and renewal. To this end, select workshops will focus on concrete steps to increase writing and research productivity amidst the demands of service and teaching, as well as developing a narrative and plan to define one’s ongoing research trajectory.
- MENTORING AND COMMUNITY FORMATION to ensure that new faculty are connected with colleagues from across campus who can provide mentorship and guidance around a range of professional issues and topics. We will work with individual faculty to help them establish a mentorship network across campus in support of their objectives and needs. Faculty will also benefit from developing relationships and connections with other colleagues in the program. For those interested, program staff will match faculty with more senior faculty to discuss progress on an article, book proposal, book chapter, grant proposal, or navigating the academy.
- RESILIENCE AND WELL-BEING IN THE ACADEMY – Transitions into new environments, institutions, workplaces and communities can be taxing. Establishing a sustainable work-life balance can be particularly challenging in this period. A portion of the program will focus on approaches and experiences to help new faculty thrive during this transition.
