Amid major challenges and changes at the UO, the principle of shared governance must be preserved. The University Charter of 1876 states, “The President and professors constitute the faculty of the University, and, as such, shall have the immediate government and discipline of it and the students therein.”  The members of United Academics believe that we must protect the critical role of faculty in university governance to preserve the UO’s public mission while ensuring that a new board (with a still-unknown membership) will not have the power to circumvent the principle of shared governance. In this new context, it is critical that we support the UO Senate’s resolution urging the ......... more »

First of all, we would like to give an enormous thank you to all who took part in the rally on Tuesday! Your vocal and energetic support was invigorating. The strong turnout will encourage us through the next rounds of bargaining. At this point it’s good to remember that we have quite a lot to celebrate. We’re very pleased that promotion for NTTF will no longer be up or out, for example, and that we’re very close to agreement on an enforceable grievance procedure, something UO faculty have not had. We are making real progress on other proposals, too, such as policies for review and promotion of NTTF and TTF. We are continuing our push for significant salary increases and fair salary ......... more »

Dear Colleagues, We’re not on the faculty negotiating team, but we have followed negotiations closely since they began in November. We have been consistently impressed with the professionalism and moderation of the faculty negotiating team’s proposals. However, after attending a number of negotiating sessions as observers, we are discouraged by the UO Administration’s negotiators, who have failed to respond effectively and efficiently to our union’s proposals. The United Academics Contract Action Team is calling on all faculty to greet the negotiating teams as they conclude next Tuesday’s bargaining session (May 7) at Noon at the northwest entrance to Knight Library.
